Soft Chocolate Layers, Cherry Filling & Whipped Cream Frosting
A rich and classic Black Forest Cake made with moist chocolate sponge, sweet cherry filling, fluffy whipped cream, and beautiful chocolate shavings. Perfect for birthdays, celebrations, and special dessert tables.
🍰 Cake Ingredients
• All-purpose flour – 3 cups / 375g
• Granulated sugar – 2½ cups / 500g
• Unsweetened cocoa powder – 1 cup / 90g
• Baking powder – 2½ teaspoons
• Baking soda – 2 teaspoons
• Salt – 1 teaspoon
• Eggs – 6 large
• Vegetable oil – 1¼ cups / 300ml
• Buttermilk – 1½ cups / 360ml
• Hot coffee or hot water – 1½ cups / 360ml
• Vanilla extract – 2 teaspoons
👩🍳 Chocolate Cake Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 170°C. Grease and line three 8-inch cake pans.
- In a large bowl, mix together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
- In another bowl, whisk eggs, vegetable oil, buttermilk, and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until smooth.
- Slowly stir in the hot coffee or hot water. The batter will be thin, and that is normal.
- Divide the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool completely before assembling.
🍒 Cherry Filling
Ingredients
• Pitted cherries – 3 cups / 450g
• Sugar – ½ cup / 100g
• Cornstarch – 2 tablespoons
• Water – ¼ cup / 60ml
• Cherry syrup or cherry juice – ¼ cup / 60ml
Preparation
- In a saucepan, cook cherries, sugar, water, and cherry juice over medium heat.
- Mix cornstarch with a little water, then add it to the cherry mixture.
- Cook until the filling becomes thick, glossy, and rich.
- Let it cool completely before using.
🤍 Whipped Cream Frosting
Ingredients
• Cold whipping cream – 4 cups / 960ml
• Powdered sugar – 1 cup / 120g
• Vanilla extract – 2 teaspoons
Preparation
- Whip the cold cream until soft peaks form.
- Add powdered sugar and vanilla extract.
- Continue whipping until stiff peaks form.
- Keep chilled until ready to use.
🍫 Chocolate Shavings
Optional Decoration
• Dark chocolate – 200g
Grate or shave the chocolate using a vegetable peeler and set aside for decoration.
🎂 Cake Assembly
- Place the first chocolate cake layer on a cake board.
- Brush lightly with cherry syrup if desired.
- Spread a layer of whipped cream, then add cherry filling.
- Place the second cake layer on top and repeat the same process.
- Add the third cake layer and frost the whole cake with whipped cream.
- Decorate with chocolate shavings and cherries.
- Chill before slicing for a cleaner and more beautiful cake cut.
